An electric kettle is portable and quick to use. It can even be used for making instant noodles, yum! Be sure to pack some oven mitts as well. Pro Tip: Lots of dorms have communal kitchens so bringing an individual microwave or toaster is not necessary. Bring an extension cord, preferably with several sockets for charging gadgets, because kids these days are basically non-stop charging. There are some really good storage companies that work with students at my school, so people leave most of their stuff at the storage companies over summer. If you would have to transport everything back and forth every summer, probably better to learn how to deal with less. Also, if you are planning on flying home for Thanksgiving or some other fall break, take home your summer clothes when you fly home and swap them out for your warmer winter clothes.
Also, how much you should pack, as others have mentioned, depends on how often you will be coming home, how far away from home you are and where your college is. If your school is in the middle of nowhere, you should pack things like food and medicine to last you along with colder-weather clothing too- for me, I was near a big mall and was able to buy sweaters and stuff.
