Glue the foil in place. Why do you think you should coat the inside of the box with foil like this? Glue or tape a sheet of black paper to the bottom of the box, centered there.
This will act as your solar oven's heat sink. How do you think it will help cook your food? Lastly, use a wooden skewer or pencil and some tape to prop the solar oven's lid up, at about a degree angle from the rest of the box. Leave the solar oven outside on a hot day nonwindy days of at least 85degrees Fahrenheit work best.
Does the oven get very warm? Extra: If you want to cook a s'more, break a graham cracker in half and place a marshmallow and small piece of chocolate between the cracker halves. Place the prepared s'more on a small square of aluminum foil that is slightly larger than the s'more this will serve as a tray and put it in your solar oven on top of the black sheet of paper.
Put the solar oven outside where it will get full, direct sunlight for at least 30 minutes and keep it turned so that the flap faces the sun. When the marshmallow is soft your s'more should be ready to eat and enjoy! How long does it take to cook the s'more in your solar oven?
Extra: There are a lot of variables that you can try to tweak in your oven design to make it even better. Can you make your solar oven more efficient by changing the angle of the reflector flap, using different materials to insulate it or changing its shape or size? Extra: Use a thermometer to quantify how efficient your oven is; record the temperature readings inside your oven over time.
How hot can it get? How does this compare with a real oven? Extra: The weather outside can significantly affect how well a solar oven performs. How well does it cook on a warm day versus a very hot day? What about a sunny day versus an overcast one? Extra: In this activity you made a very simple box-type solar oven, but you could build another oven using a more efficient design to make the solar oven get even hotter!
When sunlight enters the box through the glass top, the light waves strike the bottom, making it scorching hot. Dark colors are better at absorbing heat, that's why the inside is black.
The molecules that make up the box get excited and generate more heat. The box traps the heat, and the oven gets hotter and hotter. The effect is the same as what goes on in a standard oven: The food cooks. That's hot enough to safely cook meat. A parabolic cooker can get even hotter, up to degrees F degrees C , which is hot enough to fry food or bake bread.
It works a lot like a stove, and it's big, sometimes up to several feet across. A pot of food sits on an arm that holds it in the center of the curved reflectors, suspended slightly above the bottom point of the oven, where all the light is concentrated.
This small point gets so hot -- and the molecules vibrate so much -- that the heat waves move upward in a steady stream to strike the bottom of the pot. Both parabolic and box cookers are quite large, making them difficult to carry around. In Western India, a school canteen harnesses the power of the sun to prepare student meals. Over 70 billion land animals are slaughtered globally per year, with dire consequences for the environment.
Meat eaters Neil King and Gabriel Borrud face uncomfortable truths as they seek ways out of the meat paradox. Rukam's residents thought selling their land to a palm oil company would bring wealth, but the environment has suffered. Floods, heat and disease: The health impacts of climate change are already being felt. Making the connection between the planet's health and our own could drive climate action, say experts. In the surprise announcement, China acknowledged "there is a gap" between current climate efforts and the targets set by the Paris Agreement.
The US and China are the world's largest emitters of greenhouse gases. Around 30 countries, cities and car manufacturers are planning a total shift to emission-free vehicles by But a number of major automaking countries — including China, the US and Germany — are not on board.

An effective solar cooker will use the energy of the sun to heat a cooking vessel and efficiently retain the energy heat for maximum cooking effectiveness. Solar Cooker Videos. For maximum efficiency it is necessary to "track" the sun, or in other words adjust your solar cooker so that it is directly towards the sun in order to be able to better concentrate and absorb the suns rays. This does not mean that you must continually stand beside the solar cooker the whole cooking period.
But it can mean adjusting the angle and direction every so often or every set period, such as every one to two hours. The more direct that the sun's rays are towards the food and cooking pot the greater the energy heat capacity will be from the sun's converted rays. Ideal cooking results when using a solar oven occur when the sun is bright and uninhibited or unimpeded by clouds, shadows etc. Cooking can be accomplished as well on days when the clouds are high and thin, but it may slow things down a bit, and one would be wise to start a little earlier than usual.
Long, slow moderate solar cooking, such as with stew, chili, veggies etc. Baking on the other hand will take longer and the temperatures will not be as optimum as could be, thus resulting in mixed outcomes with your baked goods.
There are three main components to most solar cookers, or you could say three main principles to effective solar cooking; these being:. Concentration of the sun's rays is performed most often by reflecting panels, petals and such surfaces that can "focus" or concentrate the rays of light UV to a point or concentration. These reflecting panels are usually made of materials that are shiny and reflective due to the substance used in their manufacture, such as silver, chromium and aluminum. Without a means to concentrate the sun's rays it can take longer to heat objects or surfaces, thus most solar cookers are constructed with reflector panels to speed up the process of heat accumulation.
Absorption of the sun's energy heat in solar cooking is best achieved when a surface is dark in color, thus the most common solar oven interiors are usually black in color as well as the color of the cookware used for cooking the food.
Dark colors absorb the heat, whereas light colors do not absorb heat well. And some colors can reflect the sun's energy away, such as silver for example. Generally, the best cookware for solar cooking is the dark, thin variety because it absorbs the heat energy well; and because it is thin, it can then transfer the heat more quickly and evenly to the food. Retention is the final principle in solar cooking. If a solar cooker is not well insulated and if it does not have a cover, or lid, then all of the concentrated heat energy and all of the absorbed heat would quickly dissipate into the air and be lost to the surrounding environment.
A solar cooker must have the means to "trap" or hold the concentrated heat allowing it to accumulate and to "build up" to sufficiently high enough levels to be able to effectively cook.
